Indian
A strip mall in Bergenfield seems like the most unlikely location for an Indian restaurant. We were skeptical as most Indian restaurants seem to be clones of one another.
Taste of India, opposite the Pathmark in Bergenfield proves to be different. The restaurant has mirrors so numerous that you think you are looking out a window when you see two familiar faces staring back at you. The room is very brightly lighted even for Dan and Iona. Several ornate crystal chandeliers hang from the ceiling. As we tasted the various dishes it became apparent that not all Indian restaurants are created equal.
Taste of India has numerous appetizers, breads, soups, tandoor specialties, biryani, chicken, lamb and beef dishes to offer. They also have south Indian specialties and various vegetarian and seafood selections. We ordered meat samosa as an appetizer ($3.95). Two delectable turnovers filled with flavorful curried minced meat were served with various chutney's. It would have been nice to have had the chutney's on the table with chapati (thin crisp Indian bread) to enable us to experience the various flavors before the meal.
We considered the combination dinner for two to be the best deal at $27.95 but as we wanted to get a flavor of the restaurant, Dan ordered lamb burna which were tender pieces of lamb cooked with garlic, ginger, tomatoes and herbs. Iona had the chicken tika masala for $13.95 - boneless pieces of chicken marinated in yogurt and spices then cooked in a tandoor. She also insisted on ordering her favorite okra, Bindi masala which turned out to be excellent. Even Dan liked it. The meal was accompanied by garlic nan and a flavorful basmati rice pilaf.
We hope lots of customers discover this new restaurant soon, as it has very worthy cuisine.
