Oralee's Golden Eagle Inn
131 E. Pitt Street, Bedford, PA 15522
814-624-0800

If you find yourself traveling the Pennsylvania Turnpike, schedule a stop in historic Bedford (Exit 11). And if you're fortunate, you may be able to stay over nite at the quaint Golden Eagle Inn in the center of town. The Golden Eagle has only 16 rooms, all of them well appointed with telephone, TV, private bath, and some with king size beds and some with fireplaces. Cost per night starts at $69 including full breakfast (no wimpy continental breakfast here).

Even if you can't manage an overnight stay, do stop in for a delectable lunch, dinner, or Sunday brunch. The eclectic American food is far more creative and imaginative than you'd expect in a small town. On our last visit one of the featured appetizers was artichoke and crabmeat spread served with toasted baguettes. Entrees include homemade manicotti, chicken saltimbocca, crab cakes, and sea bass. Desserts tend to have a Southern twist: buttermilk pie, Kentucky Derby pie, and good old fashioned bread pudding. The wine list is modest but well chosen and you'll easily be able to select something to go with the many moderately priced entrees.

While in Bedford be sure to see such historic sites as Fort Bedford, Old Bedford Village, the historic covered bridges, and the Espy House that was Washington's headquarters when he, as president, personally led the troops while putting down the Whisky Rebellion.
